Email List Building in Online Marketing

An email list is simply a collection of email addresses that are organized into a list that can be emailed with the same marketing message from an email application. While anyone can buy a list of email addresses (having first checked that they were obtained lawfully and ethically), building a list has special advantages:

  • Each prospect has volunteered to be there;
  • Prospects are targeted to the marketers niche;
  • Every person on the list has entrust with the list owner.

These three factors together make the list much more responsive – that is, the chances of one of the prospects converting to become a customer is much higher than with a so-called bulk email list. The power lies in the way that the list has been built, and how it is marketed to.

A Small Tutorial in List Building

There are many, many ways to build a list. Very nearly every week, most online marketers receive an offer of a new, more effective, list building approach, online benefit, or opt-in programme. They all offer the same thing – the capacity to build an email list with no effort, quicker than ever before.

The distress with these offers is that they all build the same kind of list – one that the marketer doesn’t really own. It will be less responsive, because, very nearly invariably, the people on the list are there because they want access to everyone else.

The result is that they ignore the marketing messages, whilst redeployment their own.

List building requires a modicum of hard work. It requires plotting, precise thought, and will take time. Three of the best strategies to get people onto a list are:

  • Offer a free product for signing up;
  • Generate a free newsletter or ezine on a regular basis;
  • Add existing customers to an announcement list.

Of the above, the two most powerful will be the first and the last. Why? Because people falling into one of those categories already has a high level of entrust with the marketer. Particularly those in the last category : they have really spent money with the list owner, and will do so again.

Marketing to the Email List

The wits for having the list is to send offers to it in the hope that the list will respond by making a hold. Affiliate marketers, for model, might offer a free report, in exchange for an email address, and then send in “Recommended Products” to the list, in return for a slice of the profit.

Once one of the prospects responds to an offer, it is key that this is noted somewhere. Marketers such as Ben Settle and Michael Senoff often really recommend that the list is segmented into those who have spent money with the list owner, and those who have not.

The former get free offers, with the occasional product offer, the latter get the product recommendations. It is a approach that leverages the power of free to convert prospects on the list into customers – the lifeblood of any business enterprise.

Maintaining Your List Building Efforts and Keeping it Rolling!

The largest lists are not always the best. It’s almost similar to David Vs Goliath. Size does not always guarantee quality. When you begin building lists, and find a measure of success you can find yourself with a list that is decent sized, then you need to figure out what to do with it!

What Purpose Can A List Serve?

It serves as an instant connection with your customers and allows you to get information to them in a matter of seconds. If you want to try out a new product, service, or even just get general input you can do it in no time and without having to hunt all these people down and send out fliers. Lists save large amounts of money that would otherwise be wasted with mailing and man hours spent calling people individually. Lists provide an unprecedented level of access that cannot be underestimated or else it may cause the list to lose relevance and even lose its subscribers. When you begin to ignore a list or even misuse it, you will find that it will affect your business almost instantly.

How Much Attention Should A List Be Given?

Well you need to give a list a purpose and reason to exist. Sending out weekly flyers and monthly newsletters gives an excellent purpose to a list that will keep people looking forward to it. If you neglect your list and send things maybe once every 6 months, you may find your list decreasing in size at an insane rate. The people on your list need to know you are thinking of them and that they are not being ignored, much like when you have customers in a store, ignore them and they will only tolerate it for so long, once you hit that breaking point you will find yourself in quite a deep mess.

As fast as positive word of mouth news travels, negative can travel faster. A bad experience can kick people into gear and cause them to want to tell everyone what happened. This is why keeping open communications is essential to success. You need to allow customers a way to not only air their positive comments but a way to take up their negatives ones with you which can allow you a chance to resolve them.

Like a plant, the proper amount of care and attention, and you will soon have a list you can be proud of!
